What To Take On A Fishing Charter & How To Prepare

A man has caught a fish with Wahoo Fishing Charters.

If this is your first time on one of our Wahoo fishing charters, you’re in for a fantastic experience! The beauty of heading out with the best Sydney fishing charter is that we do all the work. Other than turning up to the agreed meeting point on time, there is very little for you to think about except having a ball.

Our charter boats in Sydney are equipped with all the latest modern technology and safety features. In addition to a superb fishing boat, we also provide the best fishing rods and equipment, as well as top-quality live bait. Depending on your time on board, we prepare terrific spreads and snacks and refreshments – you’ll not go hungry or thirsty with Wahoo!

However, if you want to make the most of your fishing trip in Sydney, we recommend you come organised. Many clients ask us how to prepare for a fishing charter, and the answer comes down to a few key areas. We share these points with you here but remember, you can reach out to our team at any time with specific questions.

We’re here to help make this an unforgettable fishing experience – welcome aboard!

Questions to ask Wahoo Charters before you board

Communication is everything! Never assume, and never hesitate to ask us questions. We want to exceed your expectations for fishing along reefs, in deep water, open sea etc, so it’s important we’re all on the same page before we cast off.

The following questions can help you – and Wahoo – shape your experience on the day.

  • Do you cater for dietary requirements?
Yes, we do. However, you need to give us advanced notice, please.
  • Will I catch fish?
Our skippers know the best fishing spots in Sydney, depending on season and conditions. It is rare to leave empty-handed. However, this is a wild sport. We don’t have any control over the fish before they’re on our line – and that’s a big part of why we love this sport so much!
  • Do I keep the fish?
Do you want to? We can organise a catch-and-release day, or you can catch and keep, provided the fish meets catch criteria.
  • What is not included in the day?
If you want any added extras, such as entertainment, or specific types of alcohol, then we need to arrange and charge accordingly. Nothing is a problem provided you give us time to organise!
  • Are we fishing the entire time?
No – we need time to boat to the site and set up gear.

What to wear on a fishing charter

What to wear charter fishing depends on the season. However, irrespective of the weather, you should pack the following:

  • Windbreaker jacket
  • Wet weather protective layers (for seaspray as much as rain)
  • Gloves
  • Hat with a strap (so it doesn’t fly off into the big blue!)
  • Polarised sunglasses

If it’s summer we recommend a long-sleeve lightweight shirt to help protect against UV rays. If you plan to take a dip, then it’s a good idea to add swimmers, goggles, a swim cap, a rashy and a beach towel to your list.

We provide towels, but they are more to dry fishy hands!

What shoes to wear on a fishing charter

Regardless of the season, you want to wear good-grip rubber sole shoes. You may choose to add a protective layer over these to keep them dry.

What to bring on a charter fishing trip

The good news is our captain and crew take care of all the essentials during your day of fishing. However, you may want to consider the following personal items:

  • Prescription medication (obviously this is mandatory. We are a long way off land if you suddenly remember!)
  • Motion sickness medication
  • Your own drinking bottle (we provide refreshments and glasses)
  • Camera
  • Extra socks
  • Cooler box if you plan to catch and take home anything (we can keep fish refrigerated whilst on board)
  • Lip balm (the sea breeze and sun can dry lips quite quickly)
  • Sunscreen (we stock but you may have a brand preference)

We provide hand sanitiser, emergency First Aid equipment and life safety jackets.

What to expect on a fishing charter

Expect to have one of the best experiences of your life – seriously! This is SO MUCH FUN. You will come away from the day elated, energised and probably addicted, as are we. Just remember to ask any questions well and truly before the departure date.

We went out on a charter today and whilst the weather was against us, Sev and Josh did everything they could to get us on to the fish. I highly recommend George and his team for your next fishing charter. We will be back.
